Need For Speed Carbon + Vista = Problems
November 11, 2006
It’s really sad that games being released so close to the “Vista Epoch” are not vista compatible. It makes me wonder what the game developers are thinking. Sure I was able to get the game to run, but it took some tweaking and lots of trial/error.
Besides the crashing, even on XP, the game really stinks. The graphics have not improved much, and for some reason it won’t let me enable anti-aliasing. Good thing ATi lets me force AA on. I’m going to sit down tonight and play through the game, and maybe update this mini-review if it gets better, but what I saw a few minutes ago did not look very promising.
Update: 11-24-2006
I’ve noticed a lot of hits to this small article, and all the search engine terms point to people having trouble running Need For Speed: Carbon on Vista. The solution is quite easy.
Go find the .exe file in the programs folder. Right click on it and select properties. Next, click the compatibility tab and select the Windows 98 option. Any other version of Windows compatibility do not work correctly. This did fix a problem with the game crashing, but it does not fix the problem with memory programs coded into the game. I am still waiting for a patch from EA to resolve this problem. Let me know if you have any other troubles and I might be able to assist you.
Update: 11-25-2006
By the looks of it, EA has realeased a patch for Carbon, but does not fix any of the real problems.
This patch has been released to address the following issues:
1. Client side EA Messenger crash
2. EA Nation registration email field character limit to small for larger email addresses
3. EA Nation registration CD Key field character limit issue
4. Issue pertaining to launching Need for Speed Carbon PCCD
5. Incorrect car names appearing in the Pursuit Tag leaderboards
All issues above will be resolved by installing the Need for Speed Carbon PCCD Patch.
Wow! EA sure did a wonderful job making the game run right. I will be sure to buy the next installment in the Need For Speed series.
Update: 12-29-2006
Thanks to Denzo for pointing out that if you rename the MOVIES folder in the Need For Speed Carbon program folder, the game will run flawlessly. You won’t get the pre-rendered videos, but you also won’t have to use the Win/98 compatibility mode. I just tested it and it runs very smoothly on Vista. I should point out that the videos need to be updated by EA if they are the problem.
UPDATE: 2-2-2007
Vista has been out in stores for some time now, and what would you know? No patch from EA. Tisk tisk tisk.
November 24, 2006 at 9:32 am
So what did you do to make it run? I’m having no luck.
November 25, 2006 at 9:51 am
Right-click the .exe -> propterties -> compability -> Compability Mode -> select “Windows 98 / Windows ME.
Amazing how bad the game looks though. Considering Most Wanted was one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever run.

Worked like a charm, but game crashes now and again!
November 29, 2006 at 10:18 am
Getting it to run isn’t a problem. Keeping the game running is the problem. I find I get a constant fault on certain races mid through the game. Sounds like a DirectX 10 Conflict. Point the finger at EA for fast tracking development and not focusing on actual problems with their software.
November 29, 2006 at 5:31 pm
It’s not really directx 10, as all my other games run just fine, if not better (apart from some graphical glitches because dx10 is not complete in my vista build). The game still has problems as I have seen with any version of windows, at least from what I have seen. It makes me wonder if the game has a hardware problem, or just poorly written (we all the the later is true.)
December 3, 2006 at 12:17 pm
Game sure did run on my Vista RTM…with those compability taken under consideration,
But the game do face problem while running in Vista..like the screen while racing, at particular section turn black…and takes time to load things…like building, lights, neon..etc Well Sure my Pc is capable of running the game as it features X1900 GT with 768 mb of ram…
But really speaking Most Wanted is one of the best game I’d played from Ea….And why not they removed a similar version like MW is still my question…I mean the concept of Carbon with winning territories etc is awesome….but they should have kept teh graphic engine more or less same as MW….
Poor Ea..guys…no wonder the game got low rating
December 5, 2006 at 12:16 pm
someone have a solution to this:
I have vista on my computer, it works if im running it in compability mode for windows 98/Me, but in two races the game stop working. I know it’s not the game, and it works fine on XP….someone??
December 5, 2006 at 4:44 pm
I still haven’t found a solution to the game crashing during a race. I would love to find a solution.
December 5, 2006 at 7:48 pm
I get passed the registration key part in the installation and then in comes up with ‘ Installation cannot continue because this game requires Direct X 0 or hight to be installed on your system, you can download the lastest version of direck x here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx ‘
I have windows vista with direct x 10? I have a Nvida Geforce Go Fx 5200 graphics card, 1gb or ram?
Ethan
December 5, 2006 at 10:24 pm
What you could do is install direct x 9, even though it won’t do anything. Also, I have found out that games do not always recognize direct x right away. For example, Half Life 2 did not show that my video card was capable of Direct x, but after a few trys of loading a game, then loading it again it worked. I don’t know how this happens, but it does.
As for installing the game, thats a new error I haven’t seen. I will look into it for you, and if I find any working solutions, I will update this post.
December 5, 2006 at 11:20 pm
hey, i might be the only one with the problem, but… the compitability mode aint working… i tried every option, also checking and unchecking all options in compitability tab, bt still wont work… anyone can help???
December 7, 2006 at 4:13 am
i have a problem wit the game aslo on vista. tried all d solutions but it didnt wrk. i use an intel 945GM display card with a 256mb memory. u got any solution Please ppl i need to feel d game.:)
December 8, 2006 at 4:21 pm
The .exe is running with this solution. (compatibility mode ->windows 98)
BUT after a certain period of progress in career the game crashes again .
Certainly is a fine solution but again the problem is not solved.
…I have nvidia graphics card and nvidia provides me with drivers that support vista x64 and 86… but i have vista 32bit version.. don’t really know what’s happening
TY in advance for a solution
December 8, 2006 at 4:41 pm
Again, the in game crashing is not Vista’s fault as far as I can see. It has something to do with the game not being programed correctly. Blame EA. They have a month to fix the problem before a flood of people start installing it on their new copies of Vista.
December 9, 2006 at 1:15 pm
Ty for your apply.
I think you’re right probably. It is a problem of EA but i think that vista are not fully functional with all operations nether that are games or programs.
BUT checked the requirements of NFS CARBON…. they are STRAIGHT… “Compatible with : Windows XP/2000 and under….”
I am not telling anything else i am waiting of a patch that solves this problem … it’s crusual !!
TY for all solutions in advance
December 9, 2006 at 2:30 pm
Sorry for flooding this conversation
but i think that you’re absolutly right!!!
I had tried to install the game under Windows XP ….
The installation was good so the game started well….for a few minutes only … i went to carreer mode to start…(i’d added saves that i had accomplished in vista version) and then i had a crash… computer restarted etc.
Then by wondering i went to “vista way” to play (compatibility mode->windows 98) to see what’s happening…. AND I SAW …… the choices of running the game was…. windows 95,windows98 /ME, windows NT 4.0, windows 2000…. BUT NO WINDOWS XP!!!
The option was disappeared…
I am totally confused every opinion is accepted for this situation
I don’t know what else to do
Again i’m sorry for flooding with my posts
December 9, 2006 at 3:27 pm
I would simply suggest playing Need for Speed Most Wanted on Vista while we wait for A carbon patch.
December 10, 2006 at 8:43 pm
EA Games SUCKS!
So I’m an avid Madden fan. Been playing since I could pick up a controller really (I’d say Madden 94 or something was my start, don’t quote me on that though). But seeing as how my XBox is out of commission, I’m stuck playing wh…
December 16, 2006 at 5:08 am
I would simply suggest playing Need for Speed Most Wanted on Vista …
said by someone…
but I cannot even play Most Wanted on Vista RC1, build 5600.
Tried what suggested here, but no help…
..but FreeCell is still ok.
December 16, 2006 at 10:47 am
That’s strange, Most Wanted works fine on Vista RC1. I wonder if you have some hardware that doesn’t have Vista drivers yet. Do you have the latest ATi, or nVidia drivers?
December 17, 2006 at 2:49 am
im running it on the vista rtm release i nabbed from work. it pissed me off, i believe i’ll stick to games that arent even rated with vista that work alot better on it
December 19, 2006 at 10:26 pm
I have the Windows Vista Business version available off of the Microsoft Volume Licensing Website installed on my machine. I am also having the problem with the DirectX 10. Looked in the Application Event Viewer and found this error and am waiting a response from EA. Again, I have the fully released business edition of Windows Vista, and I am having DirectX issues. The flood of problems has just begun!!!

Hey guys , i have a problem…when i ganna launch the game i see the 2 cars drifting , rigth , well , in 2-5 seconds after that i launch the game the screen become black and then back to the windows , why does it do that????
December 23, 2006 at 11:26 pm
hello,
i installed game properly and crack it. and started the game but game not start and no get any error msg. how i run the game.
December 26, 2006 at 1:10 am
well guys, same problem here too !
i have vista rtm, wasn’t even capable of installing the game !!!!
it kept saying “setup cannot create directory”, no matter the directory it will install it to
i also know that if u unrared the to rar files inside the game into a seperate directory, that will give u a working game (same applies to all ea-sports games) & that is what i have done
so guess what ??
game won’t start unless i choose win98 in comptability mode, ok did that, now what ??
finally game starts, no problem , create a new profile (career) & here come the real stuff:
after that tutorial race, u get into cops chasing u , u goto safe house & then u start ur first race (easy checkpoint race by default)
& this is exactly where the gam crashed
(
i have never relied on that thing called comptability mode in ordinary programs, so i will never ever think ’bout doing so in games
finally, i still can’t beleive it !!
NFS carbon IS NOT VISTA COMPATIBLE [ may be not vista compatible yet
]
let us wait & see !
December 26, 2006 at 1:16 am
I have a feeling EA is never going to release a patch to fix this. And I got around to playing the game in XP, and I was not impressed.
December 26, 2006 at 5:20 am
i try in combatibility mode Windows 95 but that not work the same wrong like 98/me
Sorry for my English! Come from Sweden!
December 26, 2006 at 10:48 am
Hi,im running Vista RTM with 2GB RAM,DualCore AMD X3800+ CPU and Radeon X800XL………..Now about carbon…
Install:OK
Start:OK(with win 98 comp mode)
Gaming:Crash in 56% of career…there is a certain part of town where the game crashes(kempton…north upper corner on world map)..and no way around to fix it(i use trainer to unlock all content..since i cant finish some races to unlock by regular method)
Solution?: none of yet and EA problably wont apply patch to fix these issues either…THANKS ALOT EA
December 27, 2006 at 4:54 am
NFS carbon really sucks like hell!!! MW was much better….!!!
the career play is too short. guess.., anybody can finish it off in a single fuckin’ day!!
the GRAPHICS……….., Oh!! shove it!!!!!!! MW gets a thumb n’ Carbon gets ma MIDDLE Finger!!
December 27, 2006 at 8:43 am
Hey.. i have windows XP, and i have carbon… but it wont load … it has the 2 cars drifting then a black screen then back to the desktop!
I have all the requirements, i have tried running it with w98…
does anyone have a solution??????
December 27, 2006 at 7:11 pm
Windows XP, crashes after the black screen. won’t start on windows 98/ME.
I talked to one of the tech guys at EA and their telling me the Intel graphic drivers won’t support this.
The fun part is that i can’t download ATI radeon or NVIDIA.
It’s too bad cause NFS most wanted was very cool.
December 28, 2006 at 12:30 pm
Thanks for all suggestions, especially on compatiblity mode windows 98.
However, it does not work in my case.
My Acer Aspire 1510 only likes 64-bit Vista, so that’s what I am running. Starting NFS immediately crashes with :

Any idea’s on how to get around it or….. will I be forced to run NFS on my older low-memory WXP machine ?
Regards
Peter.
December 28, 2006 at 12:43 pm
Sadly the 64 bit edition of Vista has a lot of issues still and even the most simple applications will not load. So I would say that you are forced to play it on your older machine.
December 29, 2006 at 5:56 am
Here’s a simple trick that actually RUNS WITHOUT PROBLEMS!! No need for compatibility mode!
Step 1: Go to your NFS: Carbon folder
Step 2: Rename the MOVIES map into Bob or Joe or Whatever
Done!
Oh, the reason why the 64-bit edition won’t run Carbon is because of Carbon doesn’t support 64 bit. I had that same error on my WinXP 64-bit edition.
I run the latest version from Tech. NET btw.
If someone wants to ask how old i am, i’m gonna answer that question now: 13.
January 1, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Hi guys! I don’t know why most of You doesn’t like CARBON! I loved it! Finished two times and I will do that again!
On Xp game works almost ok! No problem with started but sometimes error and crashed to windows! Always if I started game from load mode and first go to the map and choice some race – WINDOWS back! Solution for that problem very easy – run game – load the game and after go to freemode drvie for a 1 min and go to map mode and game will works good!
Now about VISTA – in win98/me mode game will started but if I am taking quick race after one minute even early game is stoped and I am back to windows!
That is all from me about NFS CARBON on Vista or XP!
Enjoy
January 4, 2007 at 2:42 am
thank you very mush man…..
my problem it’s ok….
January 6, 2007 at 6:53 am
I brought nfs carbon not long ago. i installed it on my windows 98 computer but when i tried to change the compatability mode, it is’nt there. the only thing that is there when i find the .exe, right click, and go on the properties, there is only the “general” tab. can someone please help me to get it to work cause it seems to be such a good game regauding the graphics. BUT I CAN’T GET IT TO WORK! and it’s driving me nuts. please help me.
January 6, 2007 at 7:09 am
hello again. by da way, i only have win 98, i do not have windows vista. so when your helping me on da problem i said about last time i left a message, if you please don’t mention vista, then it wont confuse me as much. thanks for your co operation
January 6, 2007 at 9:52 am
Sadly, Windows 98 doesn’t support all of the new features games need to run. I would recommend getting a newer OS. They don’t cost too much. However, if your computer can only run 98, then the game probably won’t work well anyways.
January 7, 2007 at 4:59 am
can i be able to get it to work at all?
January 8, 2007 at 5:05 pm
What dose this mean d3dx9_30.dII it says its not found and to re installed carbon and it should fix it, but it dont work. what do i do
January 8, 2007 at 9:20 pm
@rockboy7
No, sadly. You should get a newer computer or operating system.
@deano
It is one of the directx dll files. Search the tubes for that file and place it in your system32 folder. You should be set to go.
You could also just re-install directx..
January 10, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Thx DAWNERD, i should be able to get a new computer soon anyway, i’m getting a Dell dimension C521. this will be good for running the game. all i have to do is wait….
January 14, 2007 at 7:10 am
just delete MOVIES folder in game directory… it will be about 1,5 GB smaller, and runs without crashes.
January 14, 2007 at 9:34 am
People with the FX5200s and the radeon x300s cannot expect the game to run on their PC: thats not EA’s fault, as you clearly don’t make the minimum requirements.
Just dual boot XP and Vista: Xp for games, and Vista for bragging rights.
January 15, 2007 at 6:26 am
I can’t to play NFS carbon with Window vista Uitimate 32 bit. When i installed and click button to play. It’s show ” NFS.exe has stopped working” and show ploblem next time. ” A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if solution is available ” I don’t know what happen with me.so i ask you if you know.
Thank

1. People complaining when they didn’t spend a dime on OS and the Game ? – “installed, cracked”
2. Vista is going to be released on 29th January it means version you have is for TEST PURPOSE only mostly to get familiar with new options and interface not to run in PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT
3. Someone is complaining that Vista Business don’t run the game ( BUSINESS ) – business only it don’t even have Media Center applet build in
Buy the game, run on XP or get WII, PS3 or XBOX360
Before you buy ask EA if they will have installation patch for VISTA ready if you plan to buy new pc soon.
January 23, 2007 at 8:35 pm
I have a perfectly legal, final version of Vista on my machine, I got through the University I’m enrolled in
January 24, 2007 at 6:16 am
Rob, Legal version through uni different specially when its not released to public to 30 January. Oem versions on Dell etc are still being held of till 30th only official releases are the rtm from microsofts Tech site & subscription service but anyway hope the patch comes for carbon soon
January 29, 2007 at 8:50 pm
I installed nfs carbon in my pc and when i ran it, the graphics were all messed up, like a blurry grey square is in place of a mouse and all letters are also covered with similar grey patches, at the time of the intro video the screen is grey, and when i reach the menu, i can just see the outline of a car but the rest of the menu is lost in a grey world. . . .
i have a Nvidia Geforce2 MX/MX 400 64 mb card. . . .
What to do ?
January 30, 2007 at 7:47 am
did you check min requirements?
February 1, 2007 at 8:17 pm
I’ve upgraded my video card to a ATI Radeon x1300 and the graphics are great….I also have vista and had to change compatibility to windows 98/me…however mw is the best…this sucks…what were they thinking….I wouldn’t mind if they had taken their time and put a good product out there….I dont care if I had to upload 10 cd roms.
February 1, 2007 at 10:12 pm
Well, Vista is officially out on the shelved, yet to patch from EA.
I hope they know I’m not buying another one of their games.
February 2, 2007 at 4:26 pm
g’day guys, I just installed vista premium off the shelf and purchased a new graphics card, nvidia 7600gs 256mb and NFS Carbon runs perfect now. Before with my integrated graphics nothing in the game would even show up!
Cheers
Matt

February 5, 2007 at 7:52 am
Same, works fine in vista, only problem is the patch 1.3 (collectors edition) shows up as 1.2, and thus cannot play online.
February 5, 2007 at 7:53 am
However I have noticed the game stutters allot more than on XP.
Also remember to disable Sidebar and close the Themes service from Run/Services.msc
February 7, 2007 at 6:33 pm
I have windows xp on my computer but need for speed carbon does not work. I enter the CD-key and the license agreement shows up blank. Then after you agree to the blank license agreement it says i need directx 0 which doesnt exist.
PS. I tried NFSC on my older computer and it installs so idk what in the hell the problem is. (tried running in W2K but didnt work)
February 8, 2007 at 11:18 am
NEED FOR SPEED PROBLEMS…
Installaition Issues with NFS Carbon are usually please dont quote me on this NVIDIA PURE DVD DECODER being installed, apperently NVIDIA does something to your computer that stops the EA games from installing weird hey? honestly believe me i installed NFS CARBON worked perfectly, installed NVIDIA PURE VIDEO DECODER and wam!!! nothing would install blank EULA and when i clicked accept said i had the wrong Direct X Version, thing is ppl u cant just UNINSTALL it you have to FORMAT your WHOLE PC to make it work that the only problem!
i advise taking it back and telling them it dont work or format your PC up to you
P.S Nvidia wont admit to there software is at fault but hey we all not it is! btw i am an Nvidia FAN just not there software haha
Regards,
Ant
February 8, 2007 at 3:02 pm
but i dont have a NVIDIA pure dvd recorder so that cant be the problem on my computer. From what i hear EA doesnt sound like they help very much so i was hoping if anyone knew how to fix the problem they would enlighten me.
February 9, 2007 at 8:21 am

Thanks…

February 12, 2007 at 8:51 pm
if u have such a ATI Catalyst Control Center, just turn it off, then play the Carbon. it helps me out. but still crashed during the game on “muscle car area”. How sucks…..
but well….. i rather like Most wanted than Carbon.
February 13, 2007 at 8:09 am
I have a solution to the directx 0 message. The CD has a compatability problem. With NFSC in the CD/DVD Drive go to START>ALL PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>PROGRAM COMPATABILITY WIZARD. After that click next. then click “I want to use the program in the CD-ROM Drive. then click next until the wizard closes. Proceed installation.
This worked for me, I hope it works for you guys.

I’m about 46% completion for Need 4 speed Carbon and the game keeps crashing in certain regions which prevents me from movig forward. I read a post where somebody unlocked some regions by using something called ‘trainer’…does anybody know what that means and how I can unlock the other territories? Please Help!
February 20, 2007 at 12:32 am
Sorry dont no if ne1 already gave a solution but go to carbon .exe n change capability to win 98 or 95 then itll work
February 22, 2007 at 2:34 am
Just to those who said the graphics sucks for NFS Carbon and it’s much worse than most wanted… Maybe I should remind you to change your graphic settings… If you have a messed up graphic card, then obviously you won’t be able to enjoy the game in high quality graphics… when you got a new good graphic card and are able to set every graphic option to high, then you’ll start noticing how much better the game is compared with Most Wanted.
Also, to those who said the game is badly written. I very much like to say that, if you have no idea how much it takes to make a game, and have no idea how to code a simple program, then maybe you should shut up and don’t give comments. It is the best racing game out there and is the result of more 150 people working hard on it for a year…
Nobody has force you to get windows Vista. XP is in a perfectly stable condition. If you want Vista, then you have to accept the consequences. Technology keeps changing, therefore, EA is not responsible for making the game compatible with every new operating system or hardware. It also CLEARLY says on the game that it’s compatible with XP. (i.e. not with VISTA)
February 24, 2007 at 6:59 am
Thank’s for the tips, changing the MOVIES folder is the great solution to stop the crashs during the race !

I just bought a brand new Gateway for the purpose of school work and playing games. I paid $29.99 for NEED FOR SPEED CARBON and it won’t even play!!! Taking about being mad!!! My computer has VIsta on it. So how do I get my new game to work on my new computer???????????????? It will load then the screen will go black. I’m sure others of you have had this problem. I’m no game freak or any thing but I’d bet that when they are making new games they have to have solutions to problems like this. They know they are going to occur!!!1
February 25, 2007 at 6:22 pm
I’m having the same problem! I tried renaming the Movies folder and all the capibilities, but it does the same thing and help?
February 25, 2007 at 8:55 pm
ne1 tried gamecopyworld.com yet? It has all the trainers and cheats for carbon
February 25, 2007 at 10:49 pm
I renamed the MOVIES folder on the need for speed carbon folder from MOVIES to movies. Just change it to lower case letters and you should be able to run carbon flawlessly on Vista. I have played for over an hour and a half and it hasn’t crashed even once. Thank you again Denzo.
February 28, 2007 at 7:28 am
For all who got VISTA!!!
Go to carbon.exe or the shortcut then right click and chose “properties” then under “run as” change capability to win 98 or 95 then itll work, until you have completed 46-47 % of the game. Everybody who has completed 46-47 % is wating for a solution. Renaming MOVIES does not seem to help.
Sorry for my bad writing!

hee
i have need for speed carbon but i have no install code has anywhone die
February 28, 2007 at 8:37 am
I was playing in compatability mode up until I got to %49 then in the lower part of the map I could only complete about half of the races without the game crashing. after that point I changed the movies folder and am NOT running in compatability mode now I have full possesion of the city and need to race the boss. I am now at %60 complete with the game and so far all of the races that would crash are no longer crashing. I think that the people that are having problems with the game crashing after renaming the MOVIES folder are probably still running in Windows 95 or 98 compatability mode.
Let me know if it is working for you

For all who got VISTA!!!
Go to carbon.exe or the shortcut then right click and chose “properties” then under “run as” change capability to win 98 or 95 then itll work, until you have completed 46-47 % of the game. Everybody who has completed 46-47 % is wating for a solution. Renaming MOVIES does not seem to help.
A solution that worked for me was to take a backup of saved files, uninstall carbon, reinstalled carbon and used a nocd from gamecopyworld. (now carbon is v1.0)
(by the way I completed carbon untill 46-47 % with carbon 1.3)
the nocd is at the bottom on this “gamecopyworld”-mirror page:
http://m0008.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_nfs_carbon.shtml
the nocd is from razor 1911.
remember that you dont need to set any settings at all or remove/rename “MOVIES”-folder. The settings inside the game is your choice.
Its simple, nothing is lost, cost nothing, and it works!
The only thing is that carbon is changed from 1.3 to 1.0
(how I met this solution was when I upgraded my vista-32bit to vista-64bit.)

When i play nfs carbon on my pc it crashes when i play the first 2 races in career mode, some please help .$10 REWARD FOR ANY SOLUTIONS
March 17, 2007 at 2:24 am
when ever i try to start nfs carbon. it doesent start.
send me a suggestion
March 19, 2007 at 11:03 pm
The game’s OK – which says a lot considering how good Most Wanted was when first released. The career was too short if anything.
Changing to Win98 compatibilty mode worked for me – but loading races in the career wode was way slower than what it normally is on XP SP2.
One other *glitch*. My video card (ATI 9250 series) has only 128MB RAM (crap, I know – only takes low profile cards). However EasyInfo Tool from NFSC reports 256MB of video RAM. Is this because Vista takes some of my physical RAM?

Hi , I just played Carbon on Vista RC1 3 hours , only 1 crash .
It seems that when I lowed down some video setting , it was moving smoothenly and no crashes ( expect that 1 ) .So if you I suggest , if you have a very bad computer , lower the video settings completely down , for no crashes , and if you got better , then leave a little better settings , helped for me…
Oh and I put it to Wind. 98 compabilty and named MOVIES to mov.
Thanks for all help on this site , Dawnerd.

May 4, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Well I got NFS:Carbon running on my Vista Box no problem. No crashes or anything. (Consider turning off UAC if you haven’t already. It always helps to get rid of that useless crappy thing.)
However, I am getting a ridiculously low frame rate and it does appear to be a memory leak. My system runs in fantastically at first when it starts (aside from the fact the gfx engine sucks). But after the first few minutes of driving around or racing, the framerate progressively drops, as does system responsiveness until it gets to an unbearable point.
NFS:Carbon and BF:2142 are two shining examples of why EA Games pounds donkies. Both games were released within months/weeks of Vista release, and both games were nearly immediately declared by EA incompatible with Vista.
Not to mention all the other bugs and problems with the games even on XP systems. In the end, EA has proved once again that they do not deserve your or my money. I won’t make the mistake of buying one of their games again in the future.
May 5, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Are all of you people retarded? Why the hell can’t anyone here fucking type properly, it’s not that hard, and all the grammatical errors makes me think I’m reading posts written by 3rd grade mentally challenged kids.
May 8, 2007 at 8:26 am
well got NFS:carbon working so far got to 30% but really lots of bugs in that game crashes every5 min. and well i dont see why cant they make the game compatible to vista i mean even old games like starcarft can be run on vista…… NFS:carbon is about the only game i know that cant be run on vista thats just stupi.
well at least EA made a game that can be run on vista!!!C&C3!!!
May 10, 2007 at 9:10 am
ok to cut a long story short im a english guy in poland and i got a hp dv6331 laptop and my friend gave me a copy of his nfs carbon.i install it on vista home premium in english and i get same problem as all of you, but, as soon as i put a polish file that goes in the registry which changes the langauge of the game it works fine with no crashes or need for compatability modes oh and movies run fine so i wonder if the problem is to do with the registry?? i just thought i would post cos ive been searching to find out why i cant play this game in english on vista and i can play it fine in polish???
oh and FYI my polish sucks so gaming in polish is a pain.
May 10, 2007 at 12:01 pm
I’ve just installed the game on Vista, and i had no problems, the game didn’t crash, and it’s smooth all the way to the end.

Anyone able to get Devil May Cry 3 working in Vista? Patch 1.30 doesn’t work for me.
June 11, 2007 at 9:09 pm
June 12, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Patch 1.4 for NFSC is available here:
http://www.nfscars.net/file/view/carbon/7078.aspx
Hope this helps, I have similar Vista woes!
p.s. I haven’t actually tried it yet, downloading while I type, but the comments on the file suggest it might!

How to connect lan in nfs most wanted…. settings required……
plz send soon……
July 2, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Hi fellas!
I think judging frm this long post that the problem is just the movies. If you look at the movies file xtension, its .VP6 meaning they are compressed in VP6 codec. Thus the only thing keeping Carbon frm running in Vista without any compatability fixes is the internal VP6 decoder of nfsc.exe which obviously is not Vista [or maybe even DX10 compatible]
Come on, you lousy guys at EA!! fix this shit! On what basis are people supposed to buy your games if they don’t work ??
July 3, 2007 at 4:06 am
So you guys are saying that if i rename the movies folder name the game will work sweet?
Yeah I was also damn disappointed at Carbon, I mean Most Wanted was so freaken fantastic that I thought Carbon was gonna be a blast!!!!

hey guyz m having a
HP TX1016AU tablet pc wid
2.0 Ghz AMD 64×2 Turion
2.0 GB RAM
160 GB HDD
NVIDIA GeFORCE 6150 (128mb) which can be boosted upto 800mb by windows vista
DIRECTX 10
VISTA HOME PREMIUM.
Initially i installed d game, fine, got installed. When it comes to run, the same problem after EA logo it quits to desk. N an error msg. ” nfsc.exe has stopped responding”. Then casually i updatedd my windows n there was an update from Microsoft abt my nvidia geforce 6150 (50mb) i updated n gave nfsc a try n inagine it started working.
The main error which i receive is after runnin d game for 10-15mints. The screen gets blank n after a sec. it resumes now d game is running pretty slow. When i quit this game. A message pops out frm taskbar that VIDEO DRIVER STOPPED RESPONDING and has RECOVERED.
So them main issue is wid ur graphic drivers, n d fault is due to NVIDIA n VISTA DRIVER issues. Then i hav to restart d system to play for another 15 mintz lol.
i’ll try compatibilty option, firewall option, movie folder renaming. n will post d correct soln. here

I can’t believe how many idiots have read this and posted a comment saying “This game doesn’t work on my piece of crap Intel Graphics Card”
Why doesn’t it work, because it is not powerful. There isn’t even one Intel Chipset that support Vista Aero yet,let alone Carbon.
BTW EA Can go to hell/fire the programmer responsible for all these issues. Carbon is not the only recent game to have serious crash issues.

Thank you so much for the Vista MOVIES edit trick, that saved me a awful lot of hassel.
EA deserves the poor reputation it has. I have had endless troubles with NFSC on my PC and doubt that I’ll by any further games in this series

Bye
October 26, 2007 at 4:29 am
ok to all of you who cant get this game running.
update EVERYTHING you have. then go find the english to italian language patch. (this resolves ALL booting issues) then go find a nfsc language selector. run it choose eng obv.!! then right click on the nfsc.exe goto properties then compatability. choose win 98 me. and thats it you are done. sounds simple but this solution took about 3 hrs of trial and error grrrrrrrrrrr. but i am now running the game FIRKIN SWEET. i am running vista home with a geforce 7300go 64mb with dual core 1.65ghz and 2gig ram. make sure you follow these instructions to the letter as i tried lots of updates to get this running and this is the ONLY way it works. happy gaming people.

December 25, 2007 at 3:22 am
ok i think i can solve all your problems NOTE THIS ONLY WORKES WITH VISTA
1# for all you that have a NON HACKED version here is what to do
un-install NFSC (need for speed carbon), then insert the disc into the
drive when the auto-run pops up DO NOT ALLOW!!!!! wait about 2-3
seconds then go to my computer and RIGHT click the cd icon
go down to EXPLORE and LEFT click it once done a window pops up
look for the setup.exe THEN RIGHT click the EXE and go to
properties then wait, a box will pop up, at the top it will say
compatibility click it then select use compatibility mode
DO NOT SET 4 XP!!!!!! SET FOR 98/ME!!! the hit apply in the
bottom of the box then run the setup.exe you modifed and install
not done yeat once installed go to the runner in C:/program files/ ea softwere/nfsc.exe and do the compatibility mode for it as well(look up top if you forgot)
once done then run the exe (nfsc.exe) AND DONE !!!!!
4 thoes who have a cracked version this may not work every time but still does work.
find you luncher ( NFSC.EXE ) and run the compatibality mode for it
( LOOK UP THE TOP ) once done DO NOT RUN IT !!!!!!
RESTART YOUR COMPUTER
then once restarted then run the exe (NFSC.EXE) it should work.
if you still have problems with any game, program, softwere, appiclation, ANYTHING vista, xp ( home or pro) or pice of hardwere

Toshiba Satellite A205, T2310, 1 GB RAM, Intel X3100 Graphics,Vista Home Basic 32 bit Version, Tried everything on this entire forum all 162 or so posts …. nothing works …. wud rather play it on my old PC. Thanx for everything guys
February 16, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Ok.. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit version. I tried the method of using compatibility mode to Windows 98 but the game crashes only a few minutes of playing time. I find it lags when using compatibility mode as well. However, I finally found one configuration in the regedit which makes my machine to work with Carbon.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ELECTRONIC ARTS\NEED FOR SPEED CARBON\
I changed the Language to English UK and Locale to en_uk. And Region to NA.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ELECTRONIC ARTS\NEED FOR SPEED CARBON\1.0\
I changed the LanguageName to English UK.
I also renamed the movies folder because the game crashes when it tried to play the movie. I had now conquered two territories without any crashing.
Hope that it works for you guys. After you had changed the regedit settings, remember to remove the compatibility mode.

Hi everyone,
There are many bugs reported for this game, mine was that it returned to explorer at certain parts of the map.
Here’s my config :
Vista Home Premium 32bits
T7300
NVidia 8600M GS
2Go RAM
Like many of you, I tried everything I could find in that kind of forum, but only one worked (sorry for the author, I can’t find him back, thanks anyway ‘^^).
I’ll explain his way, that was surely over-secure, but I didn’t want to spend more time re-installing this game, here it is :
-Set compatibility of ANYTHING YOU CAN (installer and exe, …) to Windows 2000 (I tried the other versions, it didn’t work).
-Before launching ANY installer and exe, as well as after having the game installed, restart your computer.
That means you’ll have your computer restarted 3 times : after having switched compatibility of anything you can on your DVD or ISO, after having the game installed, and after having switched compatibility of anything you can in your installation folder. Well, 5 times if you install a patch (compatibility of the installer then of the .exe), and 6 times if you add a crack because we don’t want to insert the DVD everytime, how lazy are we…
Since then, everything works perfectly.
A few tips thought :
-some keys can not be changed and are hidden in the menu, generating conflicts if you assignate a command over them
-the config you choose on the menu while playing overwhelm the config in the main menu ; so since I lowered everything in the playing menu (to investigate the source of the initial bug), the config I asked in the main menu was always erased when quitting the game, so I had to remake it everytime I launched it. It’s just 30 seconds everytime, but it made me mad ‘-_-
-if you use a key generator (hey, I didn’t say I did ‘^^), be aware that the key you enter is saved in your savefile, what means if you enter another key while re-installing, you won’t be able to play your previously saved game.
This key is printed on the first line of your savefile if you open it through notepad. I tried to change the key directly on the savefile but the saved game was still impossible to open ; I am not skilled enough to explain you why.
Last thing : if you want to collect all the cards, do not launch the last event, because since then my territory was never contested ever again. And try to collect cars by type to fullfill your garage, with the cheapest cars, otherwise you’ll lose a lot of precious money and precious cars.
Now, one question : with a cracked version, impossible to play online… that was not a surprise, however if there’s a solution, feel free to explain !
Have fun.

thx for the win98 trick…it really helped
February 3, 2009 at 5:42 am
OMG people has anyone even bothered to read the requirements of the game?? Apparantly not!! IF your too lazy to read the MIMIUM requirements then I suggest you go to this site BEFORE buying any game.
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest
This site is great, I had loads of problems with Carbon, my laptop supports it all…blah blah blah. BEST thing to do is just remane MOVIES (in the instillaion file NOT the disc file) to BOB. It runs without a single glitch. Runs faster and dont change the combatibilty mode. Carbon does run on Vista as thats what my system is. JEEZE!!
REMEMEBR TO READ THE MINIUM REQUIREMENTS!!!!
Sorry for a harsh reply but some people peeve me off when they cant read, I found a sultion to peoples laziness which is that site listed above.
February 3, 2009 at 5:45 am
Oh and I missed something, NOT all laptop chips are supported. It states that on the game under the requirement.
February 14, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Unfortunately, EA isn’t very strong in
the program arena when it comes to NFS
Series games.
Carbon has been crashing since they released
it years ago. My XP-SP2 seems to run it ok,
but it still has the ‘bonk you to desktop glitch.
If Vista is having problems, you could try the
TaskManager trick, ctrl-alt-del, Right click the
NFS.exe (carbon or which one appears in the
taskmanager ‘processes’ window, on the menu you
should see the “Affinity” option for choosing
number of CPU’s (processors)… this is if your system’s processor has more than one core
(duo, quad..etc).
As for EA, they can’t even get Undercover right.
I’m ashamed to admit I own UC with the recent
slam they just added for download content, the
“Challenge Series”. They even claimed it will,
“… really put your skills to the test….”
THE CHALLENGE SERIES SUCKS as your car is
uncontrollable (slam walls even when your trying
to steer the car the opposite direction. Half
way through ‘dominating’ the races… game bonks
to desktop with the MSVRCT80.dll error.. go figure.
I’m done with EA NFS series,…. and I purchased
them all up to now…well except for Underground,
I went to UG2 and skipped UG, from what I’ve read,
I’m glad I skipped that one.
Good luck all…

one more… it’s just one more.. i’ll not buy anything from genius because my webcam has no drivers for vista 64… same will go for EA…
June 11, 2009 at 4:24 am
thanks dude for the help… first i thought smthing was wrong with my lap…so i tried playing the game several time more… but still the problem persisted… then i looked it upon in the net and found ur answer at the top… very nice…. but changing the movies folder name didnt help…
