Windows Vista, the next generation of computing. The visual eye candy masterpiece of the century. The most stable operating system from Microsoft to date. This is what they want us to think. We were told that Vista would be so stable that you wouldn’t have to restart because of programs locking up, or explorer crashing. I wish I could believe this, and I did until today.

Today alone I had to restart upwards of six times. The day before even more. It seems that the more the operating system is updated, the more problems arise. It all started a few days ago when an update was released for my monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 940bw). I’m fine with updates as they usually make things better. This one however changed the color profile of windows to look more “realistic.” If they think realistic is white being a shade of yellow, then I must be color-blind.

Trying to fix this wasn’t easy, it kept reverting the color profile back to what it thought was best. I even tried a system restore; that’s another story. But along with this color profile came something else. Photoshop decided to stop working. It would open just fine, then right before the toolbars load, gives me the error:

Hardware error. Photoshop will not exit.

System Restore brokenHmm. I wonder what caused this. System restore was my only option. Oh great, system restore is broken. That’s just great. In fact, it’s still broken today. If anyone knows how to fix it, I would sure love it if you could assist in fixing it.

That’s not the end of this yet. I tried to run system restore off the Vista Business CD Microsoft sent me … no system restore points found. Oh that’s great. Yes, I did have them enabled.

Ok, so today is really what sets me off. I sitting here, not more than an hour ago downloading updates for Quake 4. I was trying to burn files to a DVD at the same time. Although, Windows isn’t happy with letting me do what I want, instead, they must make me suffer. The computer crashes, 90% done with the download that has been going for about fourty-five minutes. This was the last time I had to restart today. Throughout the day, Vista has decided to just stop working. Mouse works great. But the GUI is completely unresponsive. Animations don’t play when you mouse over the red x, star menu doesn’t come up. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn’t even work! This was supposed to be a safeguard way to make sure you didn’t have to hard reset your computer!

It’s working again for the time being. And I’m not very pleased right now with Vista as you can tell. Don’t get me wrong, I love the new system. But why on earth did they take RC1 which worked perfectly on my computer, and destroy it for no added gain? Sure games do run now, but is that a tradeoff of stability?

Microsoft, if you read this, please fix my Vista. I would call tech support, but I don’t want to pay for it. Somehow, I think you knew this was coming so you can easily charge people to fix problems with your new OS.

And yet another victim of the Vista ”WOW” lol sorry to hear about all your troubles but really did u expect better, It’s Microsoft, they send out broken, incomplete OS’s and expect you, the user to tell them whats wrong with it.

  2. dawnerd Says:

Like I said, the release candidate worked perfect for me; better than XP. Just ticks me off when it has more time to be better and they screw it up.

  3. Cary Says:

    Try this:

Run the Reliabity and Performance Monitor tool, and check the System Stability Chart in the Reliability Monitor section. It should have a record of various problems that have occured on the system, and what components were causing the problem to better troubleshoot it.

  4. dawnerd Says:

That would help if the problem was logged. Because the system was not in a complete lock up, the system never logged the problem.

  5. first, get a downloading program like http://dfast.sourceforge.net. it allows you to resume download from ftp or http . Next, be sure you don’t do an ‘upgrade’ from an other ms os. You should do a ‘fresh’ install. however, this route costs more money.

Free operating systems. Strong, no restarts required, secure. Built to last.

I HATE VISTA! I have an AMD optron 165 and my computer went from reasonably fast to will it be done by tomorrow. Its a slug and it crashes constantly. I’m taking it off tomorrow! I like xp but I want to learn something new that works. I’m serisouly thinking about changing to Linux.

Im sorry you had trouble with Vista, and I can certainly understand wanting to try something else ( I was on the fence for a while till I tried it and voila no issues cept the doubled up mem usage, but I just dropped in more ram and Im a happy camper.) But the guy who posted a reply I just simply dont get. :(

ARGH! Just don’t do it… yet! Talk about taking the fun out of a computer. I have a Dell XPS 410… a reasonably good computer (for a mass produced one anyway)… I got the Vista “Upgrade”… now my poor box is working overtime trying to process all of the “junk” that Vista included. I don’t have an email client anymore (had to download a different one) (I HATE “Windows Live Mail” … that stuff is for people that don’t keep/organize their emails & need to have their hands held while they check thier email) I HATE Windows “Live” Messenger, I HATE that Soundblaster didn’t have time to write drivers that work… etc. etc. I am spending the next day off totally reinstalling XP until Microsoft does something right. What an absolute horror (I only listed a *few* of the nightmares I encountered with Longhorn “Vista”) What a piece of crap… glad I’m not the only one that thinks so.

I really hate vista. period! slowest peice of shit i have ever owned, i have to buy extra shit cuz nothing is compatible with it,,,,my printer, my scanner, my everything …..im so sad i wasted my money :(

  13. dawnerd Says:

I must admit, now that a few updates have rolled out, and newer driver released, the system runs so much better than XP. I’m still mad at game developers who use Vista as an excuse for poor code writing.

  14. Avenger Says:

All I can say is that I understand the frustration. I have a core2 Duo running on a board specifically designed for Vista with 1024 DDR2 and an ATI x1650 Pro AGP. I have a SATA2 Disk and everything installed on it is Vista compatible as per Vista’s upgrade advisor util. The PSU is an Antec Earthwatts 500W and all this stuff is brand new. Prior to installing Vista, I installed XP Pro to work in the hardware and also to see if any of the hardware had issues that I didn’t want to blame Vista for should they have popped up if Vista was the first OS installed with the new hardware. All worked out just fine. Ran that way for close to a month prior to switching over to Vista. Since then (about 2 months now) I have seen random reboots at close to 10 times per day while the system sits idle (I’m at work during this time!!). I have disablled the Auto restart upon system failure but don’t even get a BSOD. The only indication as to the reboots has been entries to the Event viewer with Error ID: 6008 stating that the previous shutdown was unexpected and also that MS has no resolution or info for the reboot problem. Problem Reports and resoolutions center only display one out of every 10 occurances and it has nothing solid to offer iether. I have read about the possiblity of bad RAM, Video card or it’s drivers, PSU’s and even faulty power and reset switches on the case, all of which have yet to resolve the issue. I have swapped out everything including the case and PSU with a couple of other systems I have been building. I’m tired but now stuck because I already sold off my XP pro retail to someone else (The bastard that was supposed to get this copy of Vista but bailed on the thought of it!! I guess he’s the smart one now.) In any event, I’ll keep ona’ searchin’ I suppose. I’m not here to post this as a place to find a resolve as I am sure that if Microsoft can’t figure it out, the rest of us are all doomed. I’m just tired of hearing the clowns out there chiming in with reply’s of “run memtest86″ “check your minidumps and post back here” or my favorite “download and install HJT, run it and post the results” come on guys, if you’re so smart, then why is that 9 out of 10 of the forums I’ve seen end in “Too many people have the same issues so this thread is closed” Yet, I still see no one getting an answer to thier original problem.

WOW….lol, I am glad I found this site. And I am not the only one the HATES THIS COW POOP…

I have been trying for a month to network my Lexmark printer over my Wireless network. And still will not work.

I have been to over 50 sites, including MS forum. and still no one can till me how to get it to work. YeS I have tried everything…this is no exaggeration

And I have a WOW for BillyBoy…Take your WOW and STICK UP YOUR ASS.

  16. ihatevista Says:

I completely agree with you! I HATE WINDOWS VISTA. Check out my story at http://www.ihatevista.co.uk/

  17. Tyson Says:

Hey all. I just thought I’d share a quick story with everyone. I just recently purchased vista ultimate and put it on my newly built (about a few months old) computer. I have an athlon 3800+ 2.7GHz, bfg 8800GTS, 2 gigs memory, new bios flash, brand new drivers for my graphics card(100.65 I know it’s crap) and I IMMEDIATELY got a BSOD after installation. Ok, time for reboot… wait fails to boot!? Turns out it wont go past post, gives me the error ”hal.dll missing” ugh! where to go. So I tried this again and got pretty much the same thing only this time I got it to work and everything goes by pretty smooth except for the fact that no video works. EVEN the videos that come with vista don’t work. I expect this to be nvidia error with the driver. Games work decent… although noticeably slower than my XP pro. WOW runs like royal crap at about a total of 30 frames a second on a good day. Oh btw my score for the windows vista experience is a 4.4 only because of my single core athlon, otherwise it should be sitting at a 5.3 because of my memory.
Surprisingly, the majority of my XP drivers work for the equipment I’m currently using, such as my X-Fi creative sound card, and my wireless USB. The stupid thing just locks up on me when I try to play video. Oh I’ve tried using VLC, WMP, winamp, creative media source player, quicktime. All of them get the same result. Sound works just great; only problem is it kinda sucks when you are trying to watch the latest episode of bleach when you get an immediate ”video driver suddenly stopped working and has recovered” or something like that.

I don’t care about DRM, I don’t plan to use any of it so… I just simply then just have to avoid it and I’m good to go!

LOL, I’d like to say I like vista, or rather anyone would like to say this, but in all reality these problems don’t just come from one person you know? Thanks for reading… I feel better now.

  18. Dual Says:

I’ve had bad experiences with vista as well, well not me personally, but through opinions of my friend, who’s completely frustrated by it. All of his drivers should be compatible, but he continuously gets blue screens. I checked out your story ihatevista , you seem to have had bad experiences , like others on your forum at http://www.ihatevista.co.uk – glad someone’s made a site about it!

  19. Morne Says:

    I HATE VISTA….!!!!
The only thing that impressed me is that the upgrade process from XP SP2 to Vista didn’t crash and lost all my data. But after that the fun started. Had Vista for 2 weeks now. 5 crashes without any reason. Where with XP you might get one every 2 months. When will Microsoft learn not to take their prevouis OS and start building on top of that. Security SUCKS, administrative functionality SUCKS. I renamed a word doc on my desktop to .exe. Guess what, now i can’t do anything with that file. It’s always in use, you can’t rename it, you can’t delete it. You the MAIN Administrator CAN’T do anything with the file. So for the guys out there coding worms. Just drop in on the desktop :-) . Anyways, as an Administrator I expect to be in control of everything. If i want to Kill a process in task manager i don’t want to see the Access Denied popup. WTF? Not to mention all the error messages you get when you start up, and yes, no-one have a solution for most of your errors. I would just like to ask MS one thing.
WHERE IS MY “Roll back to XP SP2″ button? I will not recommend Vista to anybody…..

  20. Sandra L Marx Says:

I am having same error where “Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown”. I actually shut down the computer, but when I did, it shut down really slowly and the last time it crashed, but came back up. I am also having trouble with Office 2007. I have to disable UAC or it thinks I have not set it up for current user. I only had one user. All this started when I got an update from quicken. Also could be from the driver update I got from NVidia. Looks like my sound is gove also.???

VISTA is a piece of crap! My 3-year old Compaq Presario with Windows XP was relatively good. I had some issues with it but nothing major. Unfortunately, it overheated a couple of days ago and I had to replace it.

I bought an Acer Aspire with Windows Vista and it is simply SHITTY. I had never seen an operating system so bad as this piece of crap. I’m returning this thing tomorrow morning and buying something else. I don’t know what I’ll get but it will be something that DOES NOT use Vista.

Bill Gates and all fo you at Microsoft: Damn You!

  23. Mr. T Says:

VIsta Isn’t that bad. i recon it doesn’t deserve the status of OS. it’s more like a service pack. and i don’t think it’s slow in comparison to xp either. initially its slower but if you were to install the same stuff on an xp machine and a vista machine the xp machine will slow down more that the vista one.

NO CRASHES HERE BUT NOT WORTH THE COUPLE HUNDRED FOR A NEW INTERFACE.

  25. Maconvert Says:

    Hi Everyone,

OK, I will say up front that I am a recent convert to Mac, so I guess I have some bias. However, as a long time Windows power user, I think that I also have some insight.

Last March I bought a high powered PC for myself (4GB RAM, Nvidia 8800GTX video card, Quad-core processor, etc). I bought it with Windows XP and Vista as a dual-boot machine. At the same time, my wife said that she wanted a new computer. Well, she’s a teacher and I thought “why not get a Mac?” Well, I wish that I had made that decision before I bought my PC, because I would have bought a Mac too.

Our Mac never crashes – period. I have done NOTHING with it since we bought it. I’ve had nothing but problems with Vista. Also, now that Mac’s use Intel processors and they have software like Parallels for it, I can run all of my Windows-only engineering software on it (compilers, PCAD, etc).

I’m most pissed off about the games (which is why I built such a good machine in the first place) that won’t run in Vista. I have to boot into XP to run them. I could have done that with a top-of-the-line Macbook Pro with bootcamp for God’s sake.

You know what the saddest part is? The drivers for my USB-to-serial port expander (USB-to-DB9 x 4) cause Vista to crash, but I can get it to work natively on the Mac without any issues, and Macs don’t even HAVE serial ports!

Anyway, I’m promised my wife that I will never EVER buy another PC if this is the best Microsoft can do. Not when I can have Mac and Windows for only 1.5 times the money.

Vista is Microsoft’s biggest screw up since ME.

    Cheers.

  26. Victor Says:

Vista is a Piece of Shit. Bought a shiney new Sony Viao for my studio which runs only Sony software. The Sony softwrae basically doesn’t work with Vista and Sony did a little sly deal with Microsoft and locked up the HD drives to make a downgrade (ironic) to XP IMPOSSIBLE by not releasing any of the Drivers for the Viao Hardware.

Its now just a £1000 toy for my kids to play “Purbal Place” coz basically I can not work at all with it.

    I’m really MAD!!!

  27. you are all very tech savvy & i only want to know how to maximize the size of the website i want to view – i get it in a small format somewhere on the page – what do i change.

    thanks
    cyn

  28. myi4u Says:

hi cynthia fisher .. i don’t quite understand by maximize the size of the website you want to view. what browser r you using? If I am not mistaken, you can press on CTRL + Mouse Scroll.

back to this post which is like one year ago, and maybe my comment is not relevant anymore but should the author find that vista is good right now, he should have made another post or update this post.

i am using p4 2.8ghz with nvidia geforce 6200a agp video card. my system run vista without any problems. i can play games without any problem too especially nfs carbon. i guess hardware also play an important part of it too. i have to purchased a new dvd-writer as my old cd writer and dvd rom do not work with vista.

overall, i am satisfied with the performance and getting what i want. for those hardcore gamers, may i suggest that u try vlite program to create your own copy of vista which allows u to remove functionalities that come preinstalled with vista? this will definitely speed up everything …

the reason that i upgrade from xp to vista is that i believe the handling of hardware and software would improve and so far, it’s up to my expectation.

one last thing, users should be the one to control the machine.

  29. Lara Says:

I just want to ad that this guy “Avenger” had the exact same problem as I have with the:
“The only indication as to the reboots has been entries to the Event viewer with Error ID: 6008 stating that the previous shutdown was unexpected and also that MS has no resolution or info for the reboot problem.”
And I have also had some minor security problems and other errors too. Most of them are fixed, but the 6008 is still there to reboot my computer for no known reason.
Sigh, and no help that I can find on the internet has got any solution for this irritating piece of shit. There’s no hardware problems what so ever, everything is compatible with vista and all drivers all up to date etc. Good thing that I didn’t buy vista, would have been such a waste of money. I guess I will have to go back to xp or maybe I could try installing linux.
